The Havering Saxophonics was founded in 2008 by John Cook, owner of the Hornchurch based Saxophone and Woodwind shop East Coast Wind.
John's idea to start the Havering Saxophonics was inspired by his adult customers that had attained a good level on their saxophone but could not find anywhere to play as a group. At first John hired a local school for only 6 weeks as he thought the fledgling group would lose interest and fade away. He is the first to admit he was wrong. Securing local music teacher Rob Downing as the Musical Director, the group grew in numbers each week and so did the standard of their playing. After only a few months the Havering Saxophonics played their very first gig at the huge Queens Theatre in Hornchurch. With a growing reputation more enquiries for booking the band continued. The Havering Show , Thurrock Music Festival and the Horndon on the Hill Feast and Fayre to name a few. In additiion to the regular Tuesday rehearsals the Havering Saxophonics host some special saxophone events throughout the year. This years big event is the HAVERING SAX - FEST on July 4th. They also host tuesday evening Masterclasses that in 2010 have included Simon Spillet. Rob Hughes, Andy Tweed, Mike Parlett .
The aim of the Havering Saxophonics has remained true to Johns initial idea. To provide a meeting place for Saxophonists to come along and enjoy playing their saxophone with like minded players irrespective of age or ability. If you think you fit the bill come along. Havering is very fortunate to have a band like this.
